3 years.
3 years since our ‘shock and awe’ invasion of Iraq.
What has changed? Everything and nothing.
I came across this article today: Welcome to Liberated Iraq
I’m sure there are good things happening in Iraq. Some tiny things are much better than the days of Saddam. More and more each day I feel like we’re just in the way. I think we’re just keeping a wound open. Finish the ‘job’? What is the ‘job’?
We need to actually listen to people like John Murtha, let’s not pull out – let’s not stay. I am intrigued by the idea of redeploying to the outlying areas with reactionary forces. Let the Iraqi’s figure out the rest of their lives. Civil war? Perhaps for a short while, until they shake out the troublemakers. Iran over influences the Shiite population? Nah, from what I hear Arab Shiite and Persian Shiite (some podcast or news drivel, can’t remember, sorry) aren’t the most compatible people on the planet. Only when they have a unifying concern, i.e. occupying foreign army in the region. US

I also don’t think the Iraqis like foreign insurgent fighters or al-Qa'ida terrorists in their country, (they weren’t their before we invaded) and I think they would resist them, push them back out of their ‘business’.
Am I over optimistic about a full-blown western style democracy blooming in our absence in the area? I’m not in the least optimistic traditional democracy will bloom there with our without us.
My opinion always brings me back to that scene in Lawrence of Arabia, where all the tribes sit at a table to ‘bring a unifying Arab democracy’ to the area (Later to be known as Iraq). They squabbled violently almost childishly. There is just too much opposing diversity. If I were to predict
what may happen I’d say that the country will split up, Kurds will take over the north, as they have been for years now. The Shiite populations will dominated the young political process, perhaps along with some prominent and capitalist Sunni upper class and create a semi-theocracy in the south. The rest of the Sunni will just have to succumb to being a downtrodden minority. It’s either that or emigrate out of the country.Let’s just move out to the boarders, keep other nations and elements from seeping through the boarders while the Iraqi’s figure out what they want to do. Let’s get our troops and equipment out of danger while they sort it all out.
The President and his ‘Advisors’ have created a huge mess. They don’t know how to fix it, and they are too stubborn to ask someone. I wish they would just shut up and listen.
