Who put the 'blech' in aging?

Comcast, up to this point anyway. After the honeymoon we had all our computers set up in a wireless network attached to some high-speed Internet. In theory this sounds like a good deal right? I thought having a Broadband, file sharing, and printer sharing sounds like a sweet system. Well, ever since we had it hooked up two weeks ago it’s been a pain. Cable dropping out in the middle of some killer game … or games, because usually when it goes down everyone from every room pops out and queries the IT guy (me) “hey, is the internet down?” No, THE Internet isn’t down – but our network blows. Or the wireless connection is ‘excellent’ but none of the computers can actually access the Internet. UGH!

Well after fiddling around with it, I’m giving up and having the tech come back out here and fix it the correct way.

We’ll see how that goes.

It’s an issue with me. Many things are these days. I find I’m less and less an expert on many things I once thought I was. It’s humbling … it’s disturbing. I think it’s about getting older, and discovering my limitations. I’m spending a lot of time thinking about aging lately. I’ve also discovered that I can’t form a lucid opinion about my own down hill ride. But everyone faces it … don’t they?

  1. Ah, yes. The family IT guy. I ran 100 feet of cable through the attic for our TiVo and have to do HelpDesk work while I'm at the job I get paid for.

    And the lawn's mine too.

It can get frustrating but I wouldn't trade it for anything. Well, maybe the lawn thing I would.

  2. I don't understand internet service, frankly.

I had Comcast, and it's definitely faster than DSL, but it wasn't 100% reliable. If TV and internet both get delivered via cable, why is TV so reliable but internet not? Why does internet service become intermittent?

Now I have Qwest DSL (using entirely different equipment, by the way), and guess what? It's equally flaky, if not worse. And why is it that my internet will go down but my phone works just fine.

    I don't get it.
