Week's End

from an article in The Atlantic Monthly:

... the term "leisure" is used to describe three different things: "The first is being allowed to do something. The second is being allowed to do anything. And the third (and perhaps most rare and precious) is being allowed to do nothing." -- read more

A lovely read (especially if you imagine it read by someone with a British accent) all about our favorite days ... the weekend.

"for many people weekend free time has become not a chance to escape work but a chance to create work that is more meaningful—to work at recreation—in order to realize the personal satisfactions that the workplace no longer offers."

So true, that and chores, and now school for me ... the weekend is more work than my work week. Especially in relation to my mind-numbing anti challenging job I have now. Additionally, I feel inadequate if I waste a weekend. I can't feel good about just sitting around doing 'nothing'. I should feel guilty about not doing 'something', if not productive at least in the sense of self-improving. When do I get to 'think'? When do I get to NOT think? Lately I've been doing my sacred thinking ... at work, at my desk while blindly staring at my computer screen. Like now, I'm 'blogging' at my desk, at work. Every body's working for the weekend, Loverboy sang ... why? Seems like everybody is working on the weekends. Where's the leisure in leisure anymore?

"What did you do on the weekend?" "The usual," we answer, mixing dismay with relief.
