Coder Monkey Gig

After two weeks at my new job I can imagine you're wondering how it is going. Well, it is going well. It's a big change for me. After a long training period, I will be doing the same thing repeatedly every day. The good thing is it won't be mind numbing production work, not that there's anything wrong with that if you yourself do that for a living. More power to you! I look over motor vehicle accident reports and enter them into a database for engineers and legislators to review to do whatever they do with that data.

Here's what I do in a nutshell:

  1. Read Accident reports from drivers and police that the DMV have matched up.
  2. I find where in Oregon that accident occurred.
  3. I figure out what kind of road, intersection, highway the accident happened on.
  4. I figure out who did what when in what kind of weather for whatever reason.
  5. I distill that information into a string of codes and enter them into a database.
That's it. I figure it's a pretty recession-proof gig. In addition, I get into the state government system. I have benefits, holidays and I get to wear a cool name badge that allows me access to the building. I think it will be a nice job. It won't be a career. I still plan on that bluegrass cover band idea to pan out in the end.
